Next week we will be starting our third unit of inquiry entitled “Minibeasts”. This unit comes under the transdisciplinary theme of “How We Share the Planet”, and we will be looking at the concepts of form, function and connection. The central idea behind this unit is “Minibeasts play a role in our world”. We will be focusing on the following lines of inquiry: 1) types of minibeasts; 2) the roles of minibeasts in our world; and 3) how humans and minibeasts interact For more information, please read the parent letter and curriculum map below. We will be going on a school trip next week to support this new unit, and would love to have all parents accompany us. Please complete the trip permission form below and return it to school as soon as possible.
We celebrated the 45th UAE National Day! Our class visited the courtyard souk where we learned more about UAE culture, traditions, food and the colors of the UAE flag. Next week, we will begin our new unit of inquiry entitled “Water”. The central idea behind this unit is “Water as an important resource”. We will be focusing on the following lines of inquiry: 1) what water is and its uses 2) the behavior of water 3) using water responsibly For more information please see the Letter to Parents and Curriculum Map documents below.
On Thursday, November 10th GWA had a Career Dress-Up Day. We came to school dressed as the career we want when we grow up.
We wore our national dress, or the colors of our home country's flag, to school to celebrate our international diversity. We represent 16 different countries from around the world!
Dear KG1 Parents,
International day is a very important event in the life of an international school, and our young students are just beginning to make sense of what internationalism means to them. Many of our students believe that Dubai is their home country, so we ask “Where do mommy and daddy come from?” We look at the colours of the flags from the children’s home nations. To support our learning in school, we would be grateful if you could help your child to create an international person that reflects their nationality. This will be displayed in our school. Some of our students have dual nationality, and if this is the case, please try to include something from each country. Above all, please enjoy creating your international person with your child, and remember that the process of working together is much more important than the final product. Please find your cardboard template attached to this letter and return by or before Sunday, November 6th.
As part of our Unit of Inquiry - Our Senses - we have been learning a song about the five senses. Below you will find the words of the song if you would like to sing along with your child. Swimming is a compulsory component of the PYP here at GWA; we have our own unique curriculum which builds on the key competencies. We ensure that our pools are heated and maintained at a temperature which is appropriate for the students. We check the temperature of our pool every hour.
If a student is unable to swim for any reason, then parents must provide a doctor’s note to Miss Lottie Lucas ([email protected]) in advance of the lesson. An exception will be if they have not been at school the previous days leading up to the lesson then we understand that their immune system may still be low. In this case, a parents note/email to Miss Lucas is acceptable. It should be noted that the common cold is a virus and cannot be caught from a chill or wet hair. Interestingly enough, a low immune system can be susceptible to the virus and swimming in its very nature builds a strong immune system. We look forward to our next swimming lesson with your child. Kind Regards, Lottie Lucas, Mr Rocky and Mr Rey This Thursday, October 20th is "House Color Dress Up Day". We are looking forward to everyone showing their school spirit by dressing and/or accessorizing in their house color. Please see below for a description of each house and which house your child has been assigned.
As a tuning-in activity for our unit of inquiry - "Our Senses" - we went on a school trip to Spinneys in MotorCity. We used our five senses to explore the grocery store. Have a look at us using our senses of sight, hearing, smell and touch. When we returned to school we used our sense of taste when eating the lovely snack Spinneys gave us. |
